The Newbury Cut

Newbury is a small town that has a lot of excitement to offer. Incorporated in 1778 as Fisherfield (although originally called Dantzic after a Baltic seaport in 1753), Newbury has long been a destination for outdoor adventure and leisure, in a community setting.

The most prominent feature of Newbury is Mount Sunapee State Park which combines the fun of Lake Sunapee with the adventure of the mountains. A network of hiking trails crosses the park to connect the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge-Greenway with the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway. Campgrounds are available in the summer as well. A small fee to enter the park applies.

In the winter, alpine skiing and snowboarding at the Mt. Sunapee Resort, located in the State Park, make it a popular family destination. When the snow melts, the Mount Sunapee Adventure Park offers zip-lines, mini-golf climbing walls, and much more, as well as trips on the ski lifts to the top of the snowless mountain.

The grounds host the annual New Hampshire League of Craftsmen's Fair in mid-August, where hundreds of juried artists and craftsmen demonstrate and sell their creations.

Many interesting events happen at The Fells, which was founded by statesman and diplomat John Milton Hays, and is included on the National Register of Historic Places. His summer home has become a year-round home of the arts with exhibits, concerts, and dinners.

The extensive grounds, which overlook Lake Sunapee, have become hiking trails, nature preserves, and even classrooms when an expert on plants or history leads the hike.

Nearby, Newbury Harbor, at the southern end of Lake Sunapee, is a multi-season location as well. In the winter, the ice is crawling with ice fishers, snow mobiles, and ice sails; when it melts, it turns into swimmers and fishers, boats, and jet skis. If there’s any problem with a boat, or if it needs to be cleaned, Bob’s Beacon Marina can help.

Across from the public docks at Newbury Harbor is the popular Bubba’s Bar and Grille with classic American food. Other eateries include Marzelli Deli, with cold cuts, seasonal gelato, Italian specialties, food to go, coffee, and candy; Salt Hill Pub Shanty, an extension of the popular local chain; and the Mountain Spirits Tavern and Café at the Mountain Edge Resort, a friendly tavern open to the public, not just guests.

If planning to stay, one has several options, which are all centered around Mount Sunapee. Closest is the 1806 Inn at Mount Sunapee, a quaint Bed and Breakfast. The Mountain Edge Resort and Spa is, as its name states, right next to Mount Sunapee Park.

Across the street is the Sunapee Lake Lodge which shares its parking lot with Salt Hill Pub Shanty and is walking distance to Skinner’s Ski and Sports Shop. The Lake Inn at Mount Sunapee has wonderful views of the lake and is nestled into the hillside; all rooms come with either a porch or patio area.

At any time of year, Newbury is an exciting place to be. Come pay it a visit!
