Another “nude” fundraising calendar - another good cause!

Nine men and seven women from the
Lake Sunapee / Mount Sunapee area of New Hampshire freely removed most, or all, of their clothes to raise money for the Goshen Grange Hall.

The building, which is on the N.H. Historic Register, was built in 1853 as a church and then moved to its present location in 1893 where it served as a Grange Hall. It was donated to Goshen in 2002 upon the closure of the Sunapee Mountain Grange. The building is sound but needs extensive work to meet modern building codes.

When money is tight and needs are great, thrifty New Englanders find a way. Flea markets, suppers, and raffles run by the Friends of the Goshen Grange Hall provided money to stabilize the building. Now expensive work must begin because Goshen desperately needs additional office space. Thus - the 2009 calendar - in which less is hopefully more!!!

Each calendar month contains both a page with photographs and folklore, and a date page with plenty of space to note important engagements.

Baring a Little Bit for a Good Cause
The Eagle Times, July 28, 2008

Nine men and seven women from the Lake Sunapee Region have taken their clothes off to pose for a nude calendar in order to raise money for the renovation of the Goshen Grange Hall.

"I was wondering how to raise money and my daughter said why not do a nude calendar," Friends of the Goshen Grange Hall secretary, Bea Jillette, said.

The 14-month calendar is not the first time Goshen has used such a risque approach toward fundraising. In 2004, 'The Gutsy Guys of Goshen' calendar raised more than $7,000 for the hall.

"I figured maybe it was time to try it again," Jillette said. "We learned a lot from the first one."

The identities of those posing for the calendar are not revealed but many local residents may recognize a few of the subjects.

"The names were left out on purpose," Jillette said. "Some people didn't want their names used, so we left out all of the names."

The black and white photos still leave much to the imagination with carefully placed road signs, umbrellas and some clothing. Jillette took many of the photographs with a few of them contributed by Goshen residents Gigi Schendler, Peta Brennan and Jan Parmalee.

"The goal is to raise as much money as we can," Jillette said. "There's a little bit of something in the calendar for everybody."

The subjects in the photos range in age from 30 to 80-plus and have occupations such as police officer, town clerk, carpenter, house painter, mason, nurse, professor and accountant.

"Several of the people don't live in Goshen," Jillette said. "We tried to make this more regional."

In addition to the photos, the calendar contains history and trivia for each month. Each calendar sells for $15 with all proceeds benefiting the hall.

Friends of the Goshen Grange Hall secretary, Bea Jillette, peruses the recently released nude calendar which will raise money for renovations to the 155-year-old building.

Constructed in 1853 as a Christian Chapel, the hall originally stood on Brook Road before being moved in 1878 by the Methodist Society to its current location on Mill Village Road.

Sunapee Mountain Grange No. 144 purchased the building in 1892 and added a second floor. Closed in 2002, the grange donated the structure to the town.

"It was in sound shape, but in sad shape," Jillette said.

The Friends of the Goshen Grange Hall was formed in 2002 to rehabilitate the building to its former glory.

"We've put on a new roof, painted the outside and had the foundation repaired," Jillette said. "Right now we are mostly focusing our efforts on the upstairs."

Money for the hall is raised through flea markets, raffles, suppers and the calendar.
